OMG we're hunting for aliens!! Literally might see an alien today... Actually, kinda did!
Today's agenda included Roswell, the apparent town in which the aliens landed, and Santa Fe. When I noticed Roswell was on the itinerary when I first booked it, it was always one of the places I was looking forward to the most... I'm totally into aliens and space!
Now, with most town, you never really know you've arrived until you hit the town or a large welcome sign if your welcome. Well, Roswell was SLIGHTLY different. They didn't have a welcome sign, they did however have a very large spaceship set up... Yep. I LOVED IT! It was a welcome to Roswell via a space ship with aliens coming out of it and humans spotting them. Just amazing! And certainly a set up of things to come with Roswell...
The museum was right in the middle of town so we had to drive through to get to it, well, I've never seen a town so committed to something in my life. There were life size aliens literally everywhere. Petrol station, alien. Library, alien. Cinema, alien. Even houses had aliens! So you'd think with all these aliens, we'd struggle to find the alien museum... Oh no. That had the biggest alien face right in the middle of it's sign, so was pretty easy to find!
It was $5 entrance fee (should have known then really...) but oddly enough, you weren't allowed backpacks? Never been told that before, especially when there was nothing any one would want to steal! So we checked our bags into the super security system of stickers with our names on and flung behind the till, and headed in!
The museum was set up as a U shape. It started off with the original place of the supposed alien site and the man who discovered it. There was a lot of different peoples opinions and story recollections and relatives of people who were there. It was all very loosely put together and it seemed a bit like grasping at straws with certain stories! However there was one document that talked about how the ranch was completely shut down then flooded with government bodies and cars who cleaned up the site and cleared out. The guy who owned the ranch was then spotted driving a brand new car and then ended up buying a ranch out of town, for a guy who never had 2 pennies to rub together he seemed to be doing very well! And he never spoke about that since!
The best was yet to come though... We followed it through with more and more of the same thing until we came to the mothership... Literally. A whole set up display of aliens and a space ship!! Absolutely hilarious! The aliens eyes even followed you around the room! It was worth the $5 entry alone! We filter through the rest of the crap fairly quick and had a wander through the equally bad gift shop then called it quits and left! What was I really expecting? Real alien proof!? I was...
Before leaving we had a peek at some alien shops across the road. Equally as bad!! Let's just get out of Roswell please!?
Santa Fe was next on our hit list, this is where we'd be camping too. After setting up the camp, which was in such a picturesque place, it was on a ground of red sand with desert like trees all around us (how Becca drove a van and a trailer through them I'll never know!? Girls driving game is STRONG! Girl can handle her trailer.) and you could see the mountain ranges in the far distance right from our site, we headed off into Santa Fe for a wander and food!!
The buildings in Santa Fe are so different to any I've seen before, they look like they're made from clay?? I never actually found out what the style was or what they were actually made from, but they gave such an amazing western feel to the place. The main square was full of bustling shops and could have been stole from a western film, I was cowboy shops, cowboy boot shops, bars, small shops and old cafés all surround a park which had a live band stand and a crowd of couples dancing! Some classic and some western! It was so cute! I'm usually not a fan of tack shops but these were so lovely and full of actually nice stuff! I still didn't buy anything though...
We went to one of Becca's favourite restaurants for dinner, Cowgirls. Sounds good already right!? She told me they did AMAZING steaks and it's been all I've wanted since getting here, so I was SUPER excited! All the waiters and waitresses were dressed as actual cowboys and cowgirls (I like to think that's how they always dress) and spoke in Southern accents! Because they couldn't seat 13 straight away we grabbed a beer at the bar where a few locals struck up conversations with us, I'm yet to meet a rude American yet! We chilled out in the pool table lounge where it was a clash of glamour and cowboy (a little like fliss's soul really!) it had chandeliers next to ram skulls?? Sounds odd but HELL it was fabulous!!
When we got our table, I glanced at the menu but there was no point, I knew what I was having!! They have steaks of the day, so it's a different cut each day, I asked the waiter what the cut was for today... And what did he say... A pork chop. A fucking pork chop!? Eurgh, I WANT STEAK! Well I wasn't happy! Took me about 10 minutes to talk myself out of not getting a steak and choosing something else, so I got the next best thing, steak fajitas! Well it turned out pretty well if I'm honest, me and fliss shared a started of chilli cheddar fries... OMG wow! It was fries smothered in jalapeño's then smothered again in cheese... Holy cow, it was so good! We'd no sooner put our forks down, did our mains come, it was a huge platter of steak, peppers and onions sizzling, with sides of rice, beans, salsa, sour cream, cheese and guacamole... I died. The best fajitas I've ever had! Sooo good!!
By the time we got back to camp it was pretty late, so with full bellies we decided it was time for bed. With the whole site being in essentially pitch blackness we all huddled as a ground to the shower rooms to brush our teeth. Me and fliss finished before the rest (there was free wifi out front! Hello!?) so we just sat on the benches. So, yeah we were just sat there minding our own business, then we saw this man kind of huddling around the bushes.. What the hell!? He kept edging closer and closer... Well that was it, this was my death!? He put his beer down and headed over to us... Kill fliss first please!! And started talking to us... Well he was actually lovely! He was travelling back up to his university but backpacking his way there! So he talked to us a bit about Santa Fe then ended up leaving us. But he wasn't finished there! As the group walked back to the camp site, there he was just stood there! Ok now he was getting creepy.. He then starts talking to us about some 'celebrity' on the site and his dog... Ok sir thank you! We all scrambled back to site and into our tents!
So with a safely secured tent! It's good night from us! Colorado tomorrow, should be good!
