Ohhh noooo! (Yes Rachel, I still say it like Bruce and people think I just talk weird) it's our turn on the back row again! I swear when it's our turn it's like the hottest days ever (34 degrees today!).
We got to San Antonio at about 1 o'clock, we set up lunch first as everyone was super hungry, we then set up camp and I spotted a space right in the shade which would be home for the night. I've been very impressed with the campsites we've been staying in, I was totally expecting them to be something out of a horror film but they've been so clean, nice and all had pools!! After lunch the girls wanted to go in the pool so they set off, because me and fliss are lazy, we jumped in the van with Becca! We were going into the city so I just dipped my legs in, it was so warm already!
We got dropped off outside The Alamo in San Antonio with a plan to then walk through the city and down the River Walk.
The Alamo was the site in which the great fight between Texans and Mexicans took place and was originally a mission where the Spanish came to America and force converted them to Catholicism before it was later used as a fort. The Mexicans advanced on the Alamo, during the battle, which only had 100 texans defending it. The Mexicans dominated the texans, they battled for 10 days until the texans couldn't fight anymore due to lack of supplies and reinforcements. They didn't hold onto it for long as in April the Mexicans were taken by surprise by an attack from the Texan soldiers in a battle that was reportedly over in 18 minutes! The saying 'Remember the Alamo!' Reportedly came from this battle. The Mexicans were forced to retreat out of Texas and earned them their legitimacy as a 'new republic'.
After wandering through the Alamo we make our way to the River Walk which is a row of shops and bridges running along side the river under the delicious shade of trees. We dipped in and out of the shops (in search of a Starbucks if I'm being totally honest, there are none in the south!?) and went past a cool Harley Davidson shop with a big black chopper in the window.
Walking down the street all I saw was fliss's eyes widen and a give out a huge gasp. Of course she spotted a cowboy bar! Naturally there was no pulling her away, so the cowboy on the door (who was fabulous! Worked the hell of his chaps) the only words I heard come out of his mouth were Happy Hour and I was as good as sat down! Margaritas were the drink of the hour so we got a round in, half got frozen the other got it on the rocks. For a happy hour drink they were super strong!! As beautiful as the bar was, I couldn't help but feel a bit uncomfortable as the entire place was filled with taxidermy animals, granted it was partially a museum and also they were old donated pieces... Still not a fan of taxidermy animals!!
I was super excited for dinner! (There's a big shock) We usually have good food anyway, but we decided on a last minute change to making bacon mac 'n' cheese.... (I'm just letting the sound of that sink in) how delicious!? I've clearly fell victim to American cuisine because if it hasn't got cheese on it I ain't interested!! So we had bacon mac 'n' cheese, hot dogs WITH trimmings and veggies because with all this, you just need something fresh!
OMG also I did laundry!! It sounds so dull, but when your living out of a backpack it's super exciting to have fresh clothes! Also, I got to use a proper real American laundromat... It was awesome!! Had a roll of quarters and a washing trolley and everything!
Time for a super early night because we need to be up at 5:30 tomorrow for our lovely 14 hour drive to Carlsbad!
Night!
x
