Day 81.

Scooteroo

Back in Byron (god that feels so long ago!) when I first met up with Rachel, she told me about a tour she was doing called Scooteroo, when I heard what it was I knew I had to do it!

I was staying in Cool Bananas while in Agnes Water, if you are doing the east coast and stopping here, stay at Cool Bananas! It's an awesome homely hostel which do amazing food! Last night I got a steak with mash and veg for $7! I then got the BEST crepe of my life for $3, it had banana, maple syrup, apple & raspberry purée, chocolate sauce and cream wrapped up and dusted with cinnamon. YOWZA! But anyway, less about food and more about what I got up to!

We got picked up in what I nicknamed the death carriage. The driver of the minibus was mental, he drove the little bus like it was a go kart! I was happy to see the Scooter Roo sign as we pulled into the gates. As we hammered down the drive way I could see all the Harley Davidson inspired bikes lined up ready to go, I could spot from the window which one was going to be mine! We were kitted up with leather jackets embellished with kickass flames and matching helmets, we were then foolishly supplied with transfer tattoos which, naturally, we covered our entire bodies with! I was now biker ready! We had a quick introduction before he sent us off to select our bike, I literally ran towards the bike I'd seen - it was an American flag, high handle Harley looking bike. It was absolute perfection... Well so I damn thought!

From having a scooter when I was younger I was pretty confident so it was just a formality of competency then I had to painfully sit and wait for the rest to 'pass'. Watching some of the people, they shouldn't be allowed a push bike never mind a motor bike!

Once everyone had successful passed the competency test, and people who weren't were buddied up with someone else before they killed themselves, we made tracks! Now this was my first gripe with this trip, we were constantly stopping and it felt like we spent more time waiting for the massive group of people to catch up than being able to ride and enjoy it. We eventually got going and it reminded me how much I loved being on a bike! We even had a photographer following us taking action shots!

We rode around for a while, thankfully not stopping too much, spotting kangaroos in the wild, one even bounced right along side me then dashed across the road! Unfortunately that was about as good as this part got, we rode around what could be described as a rural neighbourhood, passing houses and not much else. I imagined driving by the coast or on open roads! Not local streets. My bike had also turned against me, it wouldn't go over 60kph while everyone else's went up to 80kph so I was constantly getting over took - which a speed freak does NOT enjoy!

We then stopped off by the side of the road to take photos on our bikes, again, by the side of people's house, no where scenic or picturesque at all. Hey-ho, the photos still turned out pretty good and we had a bit of a laugh while we took them! Pulling our most bad ass biker poses! I was sure my bike was broke so I asked to swap it for one of the spares we'd brought along. Well that was the worst decision of my life.

After swapping the bike it was 10x worse than the first! This one wouldn't go over 30kph and going up a hill I literally had to Flintstone it up! Not good. So while the ENTIRE group waited for me at the end of the road, I swapped it back, my American Harley never looked so appealing!

We then made bike tracks for 1770, a small boat town about 10km down from Agnes Water. We pulled up by the marina to kick back and watch the sunset. I have a new love for sunsets and sunrises since travelling, this one would have been a really beautiful one too, if the spot they'd chosen for us didn't have a huge obstructing boat right in front of us!

As the sun just set over the top of the huge boat, we hopped back on our bikes and began our journey back to Agnes Waters. By this point I was second to last in the convoy with all the slow drivers, so me and my crappy bike fit in quite well actually! It was the most enjoyable part of the day, a smooth evening ride under the darkening sky...

For something I was really looking forward to I was really quite disappointed, I think mostly because I'd just had bad luck with my bikes. So if your visiting Agnes Waters and your not doing Castaways or looking to do something before or after, it is a good laugh! Just don't go on the American flag Harley!!
